Doing a job today, filled with many faults, cutout changed last week but no earth reinstated!! Had to clamp on to cable sheathing getting good tns reading 0.40!!
Changed board but had fault on ring final rectified then found more ended up isolating the garage as was a dead short in there which was impossible
To access dude to loads of junk in there! So got ring working and safe but with no garage power!
Question is how far do you go on a cu change when faults are present?

Paper / lead cables aren’t going to explode if you sneeze near them.

I’ve re-made off 50+ year old cables and the papers and lead were as good as new. One thing that will let them down is the compound leaking out of the head and the papers dry out.
At one time I would sweat a braid to the lead, now, yes I’d use a constant pressure spring.

I test for faults before I change to CU normally.

However, when quoting did you warn the client that there may be extra costs if problems are found?

The end result is an installation that has been tested and certified by you, so you must do what needs to be done to give a satisfactory certificate.
exactly....first thing out of customers gobs his `how much`.....so the first thing out of your gob should be `we`ll see what we find`.....but a few exploratory tests beforehand usually gives it up....
