My local council (who I work for, but not currently as a spark) used to pay massive bonuses to all their skilled workers like sparks, gas engineers etc., some were coming out with ÂŁ45,000+ p/a, but that all changed with the cuts, they now pay peanuts or contract it out. I'm doing a a job for them in the New Year, managed to negotiate a half-decent day rate, but times have certainly changed.

That's obscene...... shocking. All the sparks in my area all charge at least ÂŁ30 per hour plus parts mark-up. I've not come across an hourly rate that low before. Cricky - a local builder working with me recently paid a polish lad ÂŁ10 an hour to chip up a tiled floor for a couple of days.....

Unbelievable.

It's all wrong.

Fat cat directors at councils etc dont seem to take pay cuts and they dont get a bit of dirt under their nails. Yet all the electricians who study to get qualification and still learn and study to stay up to date with regs have to take pay cuts.

It aint right.

Where are you I may have to move, ÂŁ160 a day for Domestic works and ÂŁ200.00 a Day for commercial is the Max you will get here and thats if you are lucky, the Trade has hit the floor, Are you in never never land or am I the only one who would never get that kind of money?

Supply and demand at work unfortunately. The demand for sparks hasn't increased, but there are far more around now.

Don't get me started on the nin men! Last I knew there hourly rate was around ÂŁ9.60 an hour. They get paid there full day shift for max five hours work on their round. They then get option to work overtime which is extra pay but still in there normal shift hours! They got paid twelve hours last Saturday for three hours work and triple time on boxing day! Rant over!

P.S sorry for the double post!

East Anglia - most sparks I know all charge out at ÂŁ200+ a day. Plumbers about the same, if not more, but it is more a case of demand for you... If clients come to you, it is because you have been recommended word of mouth. If that is the case, they want you and not the cheapest quote. I was told to always do a good job and that will sell you to the next. Then place a value on your services and keep to it - not all people go for cheapest - most I have come across go for quality over costs. I know plasterers who get ÂŁ200 a day plus mark-up and don't advertise for work and mostly work for private clients as opposed to major new builds......

It was like that here at one time Fella, now the floor has fallen out, I'm really glad it hasn't there, good for you, hopefully things will improve here
