How long does a PV install take?

R

Ramjam

I'm just about to start as a dedicated PV installer and was wondering how long an install normally takes. I'm about to do the C&G 2792 course and I plan to go out with a roofer as a mate having pre-ordered scaffold to be erected on-site.

I've been selling PV for another firm for a few months so I'm confident of the sales process and the MCS but a bit of practical advice on the install times and process would be much appreciated.

As I've got it in my head right now....

Arrive at site 8-8:30am with modules, inverter and mounting rails in the van
Re-confirm site survey
Start work on roof to mount rails working as a pair
Carry modules, stack up on scaffold
Mount modules
Go inside to mount inverter, meter and switchgear
Run cables
Connect and test
Demonstrate to customer, hand over documentation
Pack up and leave

I had hoped that this could be done in one day with lunch dividing roof and internal work?

I'd say a couple of days, for your first one. Maybe a bit quicker after you've done a few. From what I can see, the paperwork can be a bit of a nightmare.

The framing is the hardest bit. If you get a roof with crap tiles it will take twice as long as it will normally kick up the brackets.

We're taking 3 days, 1 man, 2kwp system + forever to do the paperwork! We're relatively new in the business but once we've got the roofer sorted we reckon 2 installs a week with backup in the office carrying out all the paperwork. Don't forget the time taken for ordering the gear, checking it's all ok, keeping an eye on stock levels, surveying and quoting, chasing up quotes later ... Lunch - haven't heard of that recently :)

4 kw system 2-3 days depening on roof tile type (slate can be a mare) and if you crack on straight away.
