Hi guys, this is what i encountered this weekend...

One of my neighbours has had a shower fitted by one of his mates that 'knows all about electrics' (upon investigation i have found out that he is not a member of a scheme but is supposed to be qualified and experienced). The cable runs straight through the kitchen wall and exterior wall and up to the next floor, clipped direct, no conduit installed and no cable protection at all (see pic).

Secondly, his house is beside a public walkway so the cable is just there waiting to be damaged by a member of the public, kids play football against this wall and people park along side the wall.

Lastly, he has an old re-wireable fuse box so no RCD protection (i know this because he asked me to replace the pull cord which stopped working within two days - i politely declined)

So people, how many reg have been broken? I can count about 5 without even picking up my BGB... [ElectriciansForums.net] How many breeches of regs???

Hi timbo, the cable is 4mm T&E, pic isn't that good, sorry. It's a 3kw shower

Mark, it's not out of the back of a socket, the hole is drilled about 150mm to the side of the fuse box and he's gone to the trouble of putting the cicuit on it's own 30A re-wireable fuse.....at no extra cost to the customer....sounds like such a nice guy...

rfears, the dangerous electrical installation is a neccesary evil then....lol....

On a serious note, i'm interested to know how you'd deal with this?? I just told him it wasn't safe and that he should get the guy back (he was charged ÂŁ200 for this) to make it safe, then i walked away...

Is your neighbour aware that LBC should have been told about this in advance? What is the point of part p if guys like this get away with not only breaking the electrical regs but also breaking the law.
Your neighbour was obviously trying to save money by not getting a qualified electrician in and I doubt this mate will want to put things right. He should ask for his money back and pay you to do it properly.
If the "mate" declines then he could always say that someone has complained to the LBC and they are sending someone out to look into it.

Joking aside, do you honestly think lbc will be in the slightest bothered that someone has had that installed he is still omongst the thousands day in day out who dont care cause its cheaper. We are in a poverty stricken country when it comes to the house occupier and electrical works

I honestly think they will not be bothered & I question why we should be bothered about Part P & schemes etc.

All these regulations / restrictions / scams exist ONLY because WE allow them to.

If every spark in the country agreed not to play along & told the Government to stuff Part P where the sun don't shine what do you think the Government would / could do about it? Not a lot is my bet.

We're all slaves because we choose to be !!

It's not here in Scotland either Timbo, thankfully. To the OP, your neighbour who had this job done obviously knows your a spark and doesnt care. Why didn't he come ask you first? Answer, cause he's a tight ar5e. You should tell him that your reporting the illegal and dangerous installation as it may be a member of the public who falls foul of his choice to use and accept the work of an unregisted installer.

This is the type of thing that makes me very very angry.

Thanks for the replies guys,

Guitarist, the spark in question isn't a Part P'er, he's supposed to be a time served electrician, i don't know him but i know of him through the industry and he's been a spark for around 20yrs (funny how you presume he's a part P'er....lol). Also, i quoted him the same price to do it originally but he said he'd get the other guy to do it because i'm quite newly qualified and just trying to get established...he said he'd like someone who new exactly what he was doing but i could have a look when the job was done if i wanted (so i could see how it should be done), can you beleive the cheek of it?

Hi wiredspark, don't you have schemes in scotland? I thought SELECT and NICEIC operated in scotland??
