Wonder how many proper apprentices are out there training through the JTL which is connected to the JIB.

Met a lad today at work, he has done approximately 1.5 years at college and was in a roofing job. The college told him something to the effect if he does not get on a firm and do his practical, his college course will be terminated.

Anyway his mum sorted things out and hes now on a proper electrical company working through the JTL as a proper apprentice.

Over the last 13 years Ive had 2 apprentices work with me and they both finished their time through the JTL scheme and turned into good JIB electrician's.

As anyone else had any dealings with proper apprentices?

I went for my Amptidue test with JTL and passed. Couple of month's later I got a job offer and took it. JTL rung a couple of months later offering me a Job with an Electrical firm but I had a placement by then. Turned it down and I don't regret it in the slightest.

I'm doing a C&G NVQ and will be taking my JIB exam in a few year's I suspect

I done a apprenticeship through a company similar to JTL called BEST...finished my apprentice ship september last year, and then got jib grading, The firm i currently work for has 2 apprentices.

The AM2 and the NVQ certs come with a JIB logo on the bottom I beleive...would check but I haven't got my shovel handy to dig them out from wherever they are!

I did my apprenticeship through JTL and it was brilliant, any questions or problems and they had no problem sorting them. I've recently qualified and recieved my JIB card on christmas eve and could happily be sent on a site and work alone to a high standard (Although I do regard a high percentage of this to be down to my previous employer or "teacher") never did my JIB exam lol, maybe you should of stuck with JTL.

hi all

i have an apprentice through jtl and has just qualified and finished his am2 they seem pretty good but i have no experience with any other provider to compare.

regards
gary

I'm genuinely bored of this whole " your not a spark unless you serve your time as a apprentice and join the JIB" nonsense it's getting on my nerves to be honnest. The old timers that served their time fair play! The apprentices that are on here fair play too, your very presence suggests your passionate and eager!.

As I said ones on here are different by their presence, but don't tell me that just because I was 27 when I started and despite a distinction in every exam and a amount of dedication and work unconciveable to you lot that I will be less of a spark than these comedians because I diddnt serve my time

Interesting opinions out there regarding the "Proper" (old school) way of getting into the trade when you're young and have no financial ties and being an apprentice for 4 years (or however long it takes) Vs those, who like High Tower and, hopefully at some point, me who didn't go the traditional route, but went to University, maybe have been in a couple of jobs and then decided that they're not office-based people or consultants in acoustics but are actually intelligent with their hands more than other ways and so decide to try to re-train but can't afford to do a 4 year apprenticeship, or are age descriminated against because the colleges only take 16 - 25 years olds.

It's a shame that those who in the latter boat seem to get a bad regard from fellow trades people for taking the shorter theory courses.

I guess there are bad examples for both sides who give themselves a bad name... But it's interesting.

I've never actually heard of the JTL until now, so out of interest, what age range do they cater for? And where is/are their southern-most location(s)?

I would say it is more about the bits than the torque of the drill. I use high quality Fisch auger bits for drilling out mortices and peg holes...
