how old is it?

I think the best way to find out this answer is to ask an experienced electrician as you will have fitted or removed these in your time.
I have acquired some old solid brass wall lights. We bought them from an old hotel which then became a bar. Can anyone give me any clues as to what to look for to find out how old they are. They are definately solid brass, the fittings are all solid brass, ie the shades are screwed in with a solid brass ring etc. These fittings are quite heavy and the glass shades are intact. They are at least 30 years old we think but would like something to look for to be more accurate.

LOL no not antiques I don't think I just want to be able to value them to sell them to recoup some money from the b* brewery. I am just off to find out what an original earth terminal is!

Yes, sorry, it was a bit late ... not enough information, I was thinking ... The 15th edition with lots of new earthing requirements came out in 1981, so if your fittings don't have an earthing terminal (to connect your earth wire to) they may be pre-'81, a long shot and vague but it sounded good last night.

Have they got an original earthing terminal?

They have a washer sort of thing with an earth wire attached to that. It appears to have been added afterwards just because the bolt holding them on seem to be a little newer but I can't be sure. I will take a couple of photos and post them.

Thanks

Christine

Not many modern fittings are solid brass so if you say the fittings are solid base then there are very old. The cable colour of the internal wiring may give a clue if it is the orginal internal wiring.

You say came for a pub try asking locals who used it

Weigh them and see what the scrap value of brass is

Funny you should say that an old gentleman came in about a month ago and told me he had last been in in 1968! He told me the last guy in Scotland to be hung was arrested in the pub (a bit gruesome...) and that Engelbert Humperdinck played in the corner of the bar before he changed his name to what it is now. He did mention his name but I was none the wiser. I wish I had asked him about the lights but his story was much more interesting! Thanks for the help. Christine

I started out in the industry mid 70's and can't remember coming across solid brass fittings but pubs like thing like that and although brass from lights has always been liked for fitting I believe brass was big in the 50's so may be from that time

Good luck on your quest
