i have ask several of the certification companies if they could tell me how qualified i am. i have passed 2351 level 1 2330 levels 2 + 3 and i have also done the 17th edition update from 16th edition to 17th. When i phoned the NICEIC they told me that i was fully qualified and that i could register with them even though i havent done an NVQ due to lack of employment. i just wanted to know how qualified i am because i am interested in going self employed. i know that i still need to sit my 2391 which i will do.

Well then the JIB would grade you as maintenance spark not installation spark

It depends really what your training involved. I trained under the 4 year EITB apprenticeship scheme, which meant a year, full-time at a training centre learning all the installation requirements and techniques for everything I would need for domestic, office and factory installation work. The apprenticeship continued for 3 further years based in an industrial setting where we were taught "real-life" installation and fault-finding on single and 3-phase supplies as well as 12, 24 and 48 volt control systems. 4 years at college went hand-in hand with all this training. During my 20+ years in the industry I have designed, built, installed and maintained equipment and systems worth millions as well as keeping up my regs qualifications.
Am I as "officially" qualified as a Electrical Trainee? Probably not.
Am I an electrician? Damn right I am.

from what i can gather you are a industrial electrician installing the power supply in factorys but pirate works on the machines not the factory itself

Maintenance technician
Break down technician
Industrial distribution installation
Industrial distribution commissioning
Control systems installation
Control systems design
Control systems commissioning
PLC programming
Engineering planning
Mechanical fitting
Mechanical machining
Mechanical design
Stick and MIG welding
Production management
Employee counselling
Employee discipline
Industrial law

Surprising what you get up to in 40 years.

but if you do your apprenticeship in a factory setting and do an electrical engineering apprenticeship, then that makes you a maintenance electrician as opposed to a actual electrician?

Its so confusing :/

As the JIB was set up to deal with installation work only this would make you a installation electrician not a actual electrician.

a sparky should be able to do everything from house bashing to industrial, they could well be better at one than another depending on what was their main area of work.but they should be able to do all areas of electrical work to a decent level

im only just getting into the trade. Is installation electrician more of a prestigious role than maintenance electrician?

Or are they really apples & oranges even though they both have the word "electrician" in their title?

In my eyes, I gotta say maintenance would be more challenging, you have to make it work safely, quickly, off your own back. The motors Ive terminated, Ive left the cover off for supervisor to inspect links, it will then be tested and commissioned...loads of back up. In a live factory the lines running,or not, and youve got people on your back wanting it fixed.

Yeah some look down on house bashers but they have to find their own work/ materials be polite.

Yeah there you go Bluebeard, a more succinct answer than me repeating JIB website verbatim.

To me, I hold the JIB as the benchmark as they stipulate underpinning knowledge 236/2330 to be graded as electrician, as well as other quals.

well thats what i was wondering. My electrical engineering apprenticeship doesnt have any exams and i wont have to do the AM2 or inspection and testing exam at the end of it. And if thats the case then i cant help but feel that my qualification will be inferior to someone who has proved that they can do the big bad Am2 etc.

I also feel like you said, an electrician who has done the AM2 etc should be able to do everything from domestic to industrial but if im a maintenance sparky then i dont think ill have the same scope.

I much prefer the role im doing now as its 99% fault finding which is the part of the job i enjoy the most.

But i dont think ill ever feel as competent as someone who has been tried and tested with the 2391 and AM2

i cant see why the am2 is some big deal tbh,it was part of the apprenticeship, the knowledge came from working with sparks in the contracting game while being an apprentice added with what you were taught at college ,they taught you then you passed on what you knew to the younger ones coming through its all different now, sadly not for the better

I think you are wrong feeling inferior, if you can fault find logically and competently then thats a worthwhile skill.

If you feel that strongly about it, sit the AM2 yourself, or ring the JIB about grading.

AM2 has been deskilled a little, no Pyro, no stop start inch run.

2391 is, for me, hard.

One day.

You can also be graded an Electrician, not an approved electrician without 2391.

so what would my grade be if i was to go JIB as i have a level 3 and 17th edition update but no nvq 3 or am2 would that make me like an advanced apprentice
