Hi, Im installing a telephone line in a house and all I have is a black telephone cable coming through the bedroom window which was chopped off when they moved in.

Im assuming I need a telephone junction box to extend the cable to the required position.

Does anyone know how to connect this to my 2 pair cable?

The black cable has 3 reds, 1 black, 1 green, 1 orange and 1 white cable.

Thanks

Hi mate the three reds are stainless steel supporting wires. Your dial tone will usually be on orange White but sometimes will be on green black. Orange White is pair one green black pair two. You would extend this cable using internal telephone cable put orange White through to your blue with White rings and White with blue rings. This then gets connected to numbers 2 and 5 it's not polarity conscious

If you want to run an extension from the master take internal cable from connections marked 2,3,5 to the same on your extension socket. Alternatively use a micro filter from a broadband line as this has a capacitor in it and will make the phone ring

to identify the incoming pair, look for 50v d.c. with a multimeter. these go to A & B or 2 & 5 on your master socket. either way round

Hi Guys, just a quick question on this issue. I was always under the impression that anything from the master socket backwards (including main cable in) was only to be tampered with by BT and anything spured off the master was ok to alter. Is this still the same theoretically?

Disconnect everything except the service providers master socket. If it still humms the fault is on their equipment or network and they cannot charge to fix it. If humm goes away start plugging things back in. It could be a bit of equipment or even wiring.
