You'd think there would be a 1:1 scale printed credit card sized reference card that had all sizes on it, singles with & without insulation, and T&E you could just hold up to the cable and get a simple identifiable size comparison. If there is such a thing, where can I get one, if there isn't Copyright ME! You heard it here first!

That'll be the piece of cardboard with samples of the cables sellotaped to it.
 
or it might just be stranded imperial cable . best left alone as it's better than anything available now to replace it.
 
did a pre CU change inspection the other day. client was concerned he might need a rewire. all circuits in 7/029 power. 3/029 lighting. IR tests fine. as good as the day it was installed 45-50 years ago. told him if it was rewired in modern metric crap, it would be no better or even worse than if left.
