How to tell if its Ac or DC... And why would I need to know?

I never stop at this forum. For example, Trev or Marvo (and even Baker after a few cans) my answer a question for me, but I then hit google for a real good read into the subject. Google is an helpful tool to some respect, but 90% of the time I google something about electrics, it's this forum that tops the results page, so I may as well be asking here :)
