I am rewiring a domestic flat and part of the spec is to install magnetic door hold on the kitchen doors, this wouldn't normally be a problem for me but they must be wired in conjunction with the smoke/heat sensors. I'm just a little baffled how get them working so that incase of a fire the doors release from the catch and close but can also be manually operated by the over ride button for every day use? Has anybody intalled this system before? I have seen them fitted in commercial/industrial sites but never in a domestic!

Dorgard (Black)

I installed loads of these a few years back into nursing homes as a quick fix when there were changes in the fire regulations, and upto Christmas, they were still working and working well.

They are not the most beautiful of things, and whether you would want them in a house is open to debate, but there maybe other less obtrusive designs available, so perhaps worth looking at

wiring them depends on what smoke/heat alarms you have in, if you have a fire panel (unlikely in domestic unless landlord/flats) ..then use the open on alarm volts free relays to drop power to magnets if you have mains smoke/heat detectors then they need to have an auxillary volts free output so you can use it again to drop power from magnets on alarm.
I made the assumption the door is held open with magnets and requires to close when fire alarm is set off.

Thanks for your reply, out of interest, when you were fitting these were they fitted with a fire alarm control panel? Or just normal sensors/alarms with out a panel? I didn't want to have to fit a control panel because then I have the hassle of commissioning it and servicing!

Dark wood, thanks for reply, your right have not fitted a panel, but not sure if this system will work with out one? Do u know if it will or how I can find some technical info regarding this concern? Thanks

the first question is why is it specd for this on a domestic flat, whats the reason for that

Very good shout jumpix, these look asif they would do the job, I will go into my wholesaler tomorrow and ask if they can get a spec on those fitting, thanks all for your help

Not too sure tbh, but it's in a block of flats in st johns wood, London, that are worth around 3.5million a piece. I am having a meeting with the client and architect Wednesday and just wanted to be as clear as possible on the matter goin into the meeting

the dorgards are great by the way,but if the spec is magnetic door retainers they may want them as opposed to dorgards, but if its high end property which a flat worth 3.5 mill is id expect a proper fire alarm in tbh,a 2 zone panel is cheap enough and will give you the felxibility you need and give you extra income on repairs and servicing..

I did think about that but installing a proper alarm panel system Is ok, I have fitted them before when working for larger companies and they always had a subcontractor come in and program/commission it with software on a laptop, do all systems need this doing to them to work? Do you recommend subbing this out? Will it be costly? Thanks

you only need a cheap 2 zone conventional panel,no programming/software needed basically plug and play
