and work is the scourge of the drinking class. in victorian times, the water was so polluted that everyone drank beer. the Russians drink vodka because it freezes at around -25 C. when water would be solid ice.

According to my dad (a fount of trivia), turning the water into beer was a way of 'proving' it - if the yeast involved in the fermentation process couldn't survive in the water then the chances are neither would the person drinking it.
