my neighbour is a joiner and has his own firm and he was asking me how much i would charge for a periodic, when i told him 150 for a standard three bed he said i was a rip off , bear in mind i jusr got 6 to do for an estate agent for that price, we got to talking about pricing and i said i try to make 200 a day as a guide when i price a job. he siad i was too expensive and he woulnt be putting work my way, he said the guy he uses chages 100 quid a day,
suppose i just want a quik rant cos personally if i wanted to earn that id go work for a firm with 25 days paid holiday.
10 minutes later i went to put a price in for a new build labour only and he told me i was too cheap and to up my price.
my neighbour is a nice guy and all but i think im glad i dont get work off him

you know what they say - never work for freinds or neibours, If ever the neibours ask I tell Im a bit busy and they would proberly be too expensive, get a quote from someone else and I'll see what I can do

it really annoys me, people think that it all goes in your back pocket, they don't realise the overheads, van, ins, part p, tools, calibration, etc.but at the end of the day you have to be happy wih the price you have given and if they find someone cheaper then good luck to them.

and as far as day rate goes, some sparks (like me) start early and graft all day and do three times as much as some others could do in a week

its not even worth entertaining him mate, the guy he uses has an alter ego as a fireman so he has the luxury of just making a bit of pocket money on the side. although it probably costs him the same in the long run cos he doesnt put 8 hours in like i do for his money and still has to get someone else in to sign it off. so just leave him to it i say

Hi I don't think those prices are unreasonable at all. I have just started working on my own and had no idea how to price work, which makes things a little awkward. I found this site though which is helping me.

Electrician Prices - Estimates of the cost of electrical jobs

It's a site where clients post up the jobs they have had done and the price they paid. A periodic inspection was between ÂŁ150-ÂŁ180

Thats a cracking tool mate thanks!

ive used that before when quoting just to have a check, i found it really helpful too
its been pointed out before on here that some people would charge 100quid for a periodic and do a half ased job but the land lord doesnt care because hes got the cert in his hand for a cheaper price, theres no way id put my name to a property that i hadnt tested properly, no matter how quick id made my money, whos the one going to prison if the electrics catch fire after an inspection

I charge between 150 and 200 for a PIR and most of my work is for landlords and letting agencies. Most of the time I catch the properties when they are empty between tenants which is a great help. There will always be a minority that will do a "drive by PIR" for a lot less. They don't seem to stay in business for long.
Your charging a fair price for a proper job. Best to have a good reputation than a reputation for being cheap !

Yep.. bang on at that money mate.
I try and return 20 quid an hour for my labour.
150 - 200 for a periodic, again, bang on for that money in my view.

Just got some work swopping out a CU and all the switches/sockets in a small council house. Will involve one or two downlighters along the way, but nothing tricky. Charging 600 for my labour (based on 3 days work) plus all the switchgear at cost.

Guy was fine with that despite another quote previouslyfrom someone of 450 all in ..!!!
now somehow i doubt that the meter tails, bonding, and local building control paperwork was being done for that money.!!
suffice to say, the client thought the price a tad cheap and suspected it wasnt to standard....

ÂŁ200 per day is no way a rip off and if he can get it done for ÂŁ100 then hes getting a job worth ÂŁ100 and not a true PIR. We price for ÂŁ200 per day per man. We do lots of PIR's every year for some big clients and I have never been questioned on our pricing. Given the expence of running a buisness today and the paperwork side of things then your price should also include time after the test to write it all up to precent to the client also.

ÂŁ100 per day.......I stay in bed.
