I hate the damn snow!

All this snow is driving me mad. Drove from Devizes to Bath friday night. No problem apart from stretch by the huge golf course at Kingsdown.
Yesterday walk into town and back via the park past the cool kids snowboarding and skiing in the park didnt slip once. Get back home go out to the underground carpark to get some bits out the boot and slip.
I now have a sprained wrist. Its better than yesterday and doesnt appear broken.
Downside I have had to cancel a job monday as i know my wrist wont be okay by then.
Reckon i ought to get snowchains and cash in on the emergency call outs next time.
In short i hate snow...
Anybody else fed up with it yet? Causes havoc with the diary.

I'd choose doing that with a nice new scissor lift, powered feeder and a couple of other sparks on a construction site over crawling on my stomach through dirty old insulation in an unlit, cramped attic, not knowing if I'm going to disturb a wasps nest, any day of the week.
Oh come on Tony, domestic is the easiest sector by far that's why any numpty can become a DI.
I would love to see any of the short course paint by numbers guys walk onto one of my clients sites and try and do our work, they would be laughed off site, once they had finished their brew, paper and sausage sandwich that is.


I'd be interested to see your RAMS for that one. BTW it's "their arse" (possessive pronoun). Familiarise yourself with"there, their and they're".

Rams go out of the window when a quarry is starting to flood because the pumps have gone down , thats in the real world though.
Just for the record I was the one up to my arse in mud and it was about 18 years ago before the world went health and safety mad.

Trouble with this and every country in this modern world we live in is that we are all going at full speed with no margin for error. A bit of snow or Ice and all of those ‘bad’ or inexperienced drivers will get in the way then everything backs up and grinds to a halt. You don’t see it on a normal day because we are all too busy noticing ourselves!

Rain = floods too much water to handle
Heat = hosepipe ban
The country can't handle anything that nature throws at it.

Don't forget "leaves on lines" and whole rail network grinds to a halt.

Well I have bought some snow chains so that in the event of further bad weather I can get out and about within reason. well worth the £35/40 I paid plus around £8 delivery from a German seller on ebay. they have to have them by law out there. no wheel spinning or grinding to a halt on hills. cant account for others but makes sense if it prevents you getting stuck.
as for my wrist, its turning yellow and purple from the bruising! much better movement, not so painful but wont be working on anything of note until late in the week at the earliest.

Yes and no , 2 house bashers are not going to be installing 240mm 4 core swa cables in parallel on ladder tray 40 ft in the air or installing 1600amp lv custom built panels in switch rooms or jointing large cables in a quarry up to there arse in mud.
Another way to look at it is one guy working on a little install is never going to get any great demand where as a client with a large and very expensive project expects miracles at times.

When I was an apprentice, many moons ago, that's exactly what we did... House "rewiring" one day, industrial 3 phase SWA the next.... and changing lamps in a chicken shed the next.
We had to carry 3 pairs of shoes each in the van each in case we got one set dirty in the morning and were expecting to walk into some posh guys country house in the afternoon.

It is good to have a variety of work for all electricians.

Not all house bashers can work on industrial.... likewise sparks that have only worked on 3 ph industrial don't know where to start rewiring a house.

Funny story re snow

Few years ago I worked for a small firm

They won a decent size social housing contract their first and merged with another firm who weren't great to work for!

Anyway had this supervisor who'd blagged his way into the job after doing his NVQ2 and working in City's for a couple of years I'll call him Gareth

He got the contract as it was nearly half the competitions tenders due to him not factoring in everyday costs like fuel, tools PPE etc
I reckon he'd lost them at least 50k a year
Cost the good guys a lot of money as they decided they had to honour the deal

I'd done a few milking robot jobs he'd priced similarly and warned the boss he was a big liability

This guy was lording it up and quite often threatened people with losing their jobs for no particular reason total pita
everyone despised him!

This particular year had a bit of snow and me and my apprentice were given a big job in Wales to test

We took it steady had to dig our selves out a couple of times and got to the job no dramas

Staff very kindly cooked us a Breakfast during which the work phone starts ringing
Finished the mouthful and answered..

New Boss on phone
" Where are you"

"We're onsite mate"

"Oh didn't think you'd make it up there"

"Yeah it's pretty dicey in places"

"Ok err Well done and err weather's supposed to get worse but try and stay til at least 5 ok"

We were planning on moving well before that due to the conditions
I thought oh well crack on

Good mood from the free Breakfast was broken for a few hours until I got another call from one of the lads who was hysterical with laughter

Apparently Gareth had rung in saying he couldn't get out of the street due to snow being so bad which was a problem as he'd got some quite important things booked in

He lived 6 mile from office, we'd gone past his place and 40 mile up into the hills

Boss decided he'd see for himself how bad it was,
drove up to the house through a light dusting of snow and knocked the door

Gareth was on his PlayStation in the front room on his own ,
on his third bottle of lager at 9.30 in the morning shouting loudly at the screen and never heard a thing as he was pretty focussed on finishing that level

The Boss got his phone out and filmed him until Gareth became aware of someone at the window waving with an angry expression

I can only imagine the look on his face

few days later we heard Gareth was moving on
