To the OP, I think the best thing you can do is to tell the lado what you actually think about his attitude to work, better still show him this thread and let the replies be the reality check he needs. I think they just assume that one day they wake up and become an electrician without putting any meaningful effort in after all most have been handed everything they have on a plate.

The falling asleep bit would soon be cured with the hot teaspoon on the back of the neck ( oh the memories ) good old days and it worked as well. but now with the cotton wool world we live in you just cant get away with it.

Ha ha a hot tea spoon or a megger across the ear lobes

Need a good rant.

Got a new apprentice started with us and he shows little or no interest in the job, has his hands in his pockets all day or on mobile phone, sleeps through dinner, and only does anything after being asked (never proactive in finding tasks).
The last one we had was just as bad.

Is it just me ( I'm only 31) or do the youngsters these days not seem to care about learning the trade and showing enthusiasm and a good impression.

I for one can't be doing with it anymore, i'd rather do the job myself than try and help someone who doesn't care.

Rant over.

Sadly you're right.

If I were still working and took an apprentice on it would be understood that his pockets would be sewn up and his phone locked in my desk drawer during working hours.

Show him this thread and tell him to get his act together, also make sure he knows that if he doesn't he'll be out on his ear.

Or a jolt with the Megger!!

I have an apprentice at the moment, he is brilliant. From day one I told him, if you I see you on your phone I'm going to smash it, if you feel sick come to work and I'll tell you if your sick, NO SMOKING! People don't want to pay for you to smoke! And if your late once you go home for the week and don't get paid. Do any 3 of these things and you can go and work for someone else. He's in his second year, 23 years old and he can already do 3 phase boards beautifully, has no problem planning jobs including ordering parts! And is also a really nice bloke.

I have a feeling he will run a brilliant company one day, and hopefully it will be mine while I have my feet up!

Haha thats the the best way to treat them

Early last year my neighbour tells me his son is looking for work experience and is at college and wants an apprenticeship , I told him to tell his son to come and see me , I spoke to the lad and made arrangements for him to join me on a rewire , he did 2 days and then he had 2 days at college , the following week the same , I told him all the final testing and certs will be done next week but would be on a day that he is at college , he was disappointed he would miss it , so I delayed it and sent him a message , I got a text message early in the morning saying he is sick and can't make it , He lives 5 doors from me , I popped round to see him , his father said he's not here , he's round his girlfriends and went to a party last night ,
WTF , I lost 2 days for him , all for him to give me crap , ,,,,
