I thought that there would be something that would limit us to how many post we can do per min.

The forum software catches a lot of the possible spam and allows us to check it long before you get to see it, the problem is it is an on going battle of defense and offense where spam bots become smarter and learn how to mimic a real account and real living spammers try to learn how the software works by becoming a member, it really doesn't take long to spot these people usually before they put their spam up.
We get daily attacks on one method but its futile because no-one would ever come across it that way and we get the occasional attack like the other day.
Clearly for security reasons I cannot go into any details of how the spam checker can be by-passed or what we look for but usually spammers like to go in attack and leave, many don't have the time to hide in a fake account that can be weeks and months just for us to remove them within the hour. We are lucky here as our members don't like spam just as much as we don't but many forums out there don't have a close nit community and spam can go unreported hence they get good exposure through web search links etc ...
