If you puncture the rear for cable entry, rather than use glands, likely that destroys the IP65 rating, unless you can be sure to seal said entry point very properly (mostly it isn't). Especially on a retaining wall, where you can expect it to turn into a wormery or sluggery.

What amazes me is how often you find these mounted via screw holes drilled inside the rear of the box, when there are 4 holes provided at the corners that are outside the sealed area.

I've never actually realised the four holes you've mentioned. Ive always used the mounting bracket which comes inside the box.
