Father in law got a shed with a 2way cu usual set up 40a 30ma rcd 16a & 6a mcbs for skt and lights. Had a problem recently with rcd tripping occasionaly ever since they had a old freezer gave them so obvious what's causing the rcd to trip nothing else plugged in but freezer but tested everthing and all ok. Told him to get rid of freezer but as it not tripping rcd every day he wants to keep.it but has asked me if there is a way of fitting some sort of alarm to tell him power is off in shed. Any ideas.

He's asked you to find out if there is anything on the market that will do the job, so just tell him you've looked and there isn't, so best thing all round is a new freezer or he'll lose all his frozen food.

It's called lying, and sometimes it's a useful way to get something done.

Lol.

Found a no power alarm which plugs in a texts up to 5 numbers when power is off but ÂŁ75+vat plus you need a sim card. Just told him price he nearly choked on his tea and mumbled something lol. He decided to go with non mait em light above door not best idea but will keep him happy. Cheers guys.

Stick the freezer on an RCBO with a NO auxiliary contactor stuck on the side, feeding a strobe lamp and/or siren back in the house.

Not much use if the RCD trips at 2 in the morning the he wakes ups up several hours later, looks out to see the light not illuminated.
Yeh Dillb that did cross my mind as well but he wants a solution that if fool prove while spending as least money as poss and that includes me to fit whatever for nothing.

Well if you're not going to fix the freezer, you might as well carry on Heath-Robinson style. Use the same circuit to power an electromagnet holding up a chunk of metal, positioned so that it falls on the knob of a CO2 fire extinguisher when the magnet lets go. Run a hose from the extinguisher to the house and put a nice big air horn on the end of it. Safe, reliable non-electric solution.

I can also recommend a small anchor to carry in the car if your brakes don't work.

As said before Lucien thankyou for your input and concerns and I will certainly take them into consideration when makng my decision what to to. Thanks again

I'm only giving you a ribbing about it because in my experience it can be something simple and cheap to fix, e.g. my friend had a freezer that tripped the RCD every now and then, it was water in the defrost element, cost a tenner and 20 mins to put right. And we had one at work, I think that was the evap fan motor wiring chafed against the fins, took a bit of heat shrink and a cable tie.
