Inductive coupled LED lights

Hi, question from a new member here.
I am installing a wet room and something I like the idea of is having a set of low level LED lights close the the bottom of wetroom area (Think plinth lights or similar). However as this is a wet room and will be fully tanked I don't want to be using something that comprimises the integrity of the tanking. So I was wondering if there are any inductively coupled led light systems around. This would hopefully make an installation where the inductive wiring would be fixed into the wall at the correct height and position., tanking goes into place and tiled on top. Tiles would be drilled to take the LED light units which would be inserted into tile but with no penetration through the membrane.
I hope I have conveyed what I'm looking for, but to be honest I think I am on a long shot
If anyone has come across something similar, do you know the proximity to the inductive loop that the LED would need to be within ?

I've never seen inductively coupled lights, I've seen inductive coupling used in very small battery chargers in fact my electric toothbrush has one but I'm not sure you'd be able to supply sufficient power to an LED lamp (3-10 watts) through this system.

Are you a spark or a DIYer - either way I'd be EXTREMELY careful doing anything along the lines of what you are considering....

Hi Marvo,

Actually the thought came to me from my tooth brush as well which locates on a peg, which I am not sure is the inductive coupling or just a locator to keep it in place (could be both). These lights would really only be decorative and not primary so probably about 0.2w each. However still might be pie in the sky hopefullness.

Another issue would be you can only transfer AC across an inductive coupler, not DC. LED's are inherently a DC device although they do often come with built-in electronics that allows them to run from an AC supply.

Technicalities aside, unless you can find a BS approved ELV system that was designed specifically for this purpose then it's a none starter. You'll have to go the traditional route and run cabling before the tanking out is done so the 12V supply can connect directly to the lights.

get creative with the bathroom fitters, there are nice ip 68 rated leds around... small hole in the middle of the tile make it watertight around, 12v leds...

Hi Amlu,

Thanks for the suggestion, I had considered something similar but am reluctant to have cables (even 12v) on the wet side of the membrane and as mentioned want to avoid perferating the membrane. I knew it was a bit of a long shot, but hey if you don't ask you might never know.
