installation work to maintenance work !!!

Hi all
At the moment i do domestic/light commercial installations ' i would like to apply for a maintenance job in our local hospital .Can any maintenance sparks tell me what sort of work it would involve and could i adapt to this kind of work !!

Rich

There are quite a few specialist areas, that you would need training for. In depth knowledge of motors and motor controls, HVAC systems, large boiler controls, IT system distribution. fire alarm, call systems, Building management systems, PA/PE safety earthing systems in designated medical rooms. Fault finding experience, is an absolute Must!!

....Lot's more really, but i think you'll see, a lot more involved than simple domestic/commercial installations...
Anyone can adapt if they want to, just depends on how interested you are in what your doing. It is an interesting area, you won't find much else out there that covers the scope of work you'll find in a modern hospital...

Hi engineer
thank you for responding to my question !! and being honest with your answer .The position up for grabs is very low at £22 kpa ( Including call out ) , i am up with regs and 2391 T&I but that is a big jump for me with what you are expected to do in the job description ,and not sure if to apply and if they would allow me time to find my feet when there is a lot of maintenance sparks out there . I suppose worth a go as i am allways willing to train just wonder if imployer can see my way of thinking

Rich :o

Brush up on testing, single phase and three phase motors, discharge lighting - removal/replacement of the innards, emergency lighting - maintained/non-maintained, fire alarm/sprinkler testing. Also a damn good knowledge of other trades helps, ie replacing floor tiles, doors etc.
You WILL no longer be recognised as a sparkie BUT as a mere maintenance man...

You could look at it another way, as a training period of your career. If successful in gaining appointment, after a couple of years, you should have a far greater understanding of our electrical industry and experience that you can take with you, on any future upward career move. As i said the scope of work within a hospital is vast.

Good luck to you....

Ken,

There's a good deal more to being a maintenace sparkie in a hospital than being a just a ''maintenace man''!!
I have no idea about UK workings in hospitals, only overseas, and electricians certainly don't get time to fit or repair tiles in those hospitals....

Hi millwall

hi millwall so i could with effort actually achieve being a maintenance guy

Yep, you sure could mate. Joking aside, its generally a lot more laid back than installation work anyway. I enjoy it mate, the secret is to keep yourself busy on quiet days. All the best fella.

Mate, I'm in the maintenance field myself at the mo, as I just posted to the OP, but I couldn't resist the chance of a wind up.

Fair enough, ...lol!!!

Thought you were having a go at maintenance sparks there for a mo. Many still believe they spend all day going round changing flu's, and you would know different from that old wives tale...lol!!!

Oh yes, I had to change the belts on a AHU today and the brushes on a hand dryer, as well as two floor tiles.
