Installing a new 36" Cooktop Question 🙋

I have a 36" Cooktop 4 wire [red, black, red, Ground] to a home with 240V 30amp 3wire 10gage wire "[White, black & Ground] the user manual says it requires 7 gage 4 wire connections with 50 Amp breaker.. That wire is HUGE! The four wires coming from the appliance are nowhere near the size of what it's requiring. In fact they are smaller than the 10 gauge. It just doesn't seem like it needs this much amperage and appears like Overkill. Would my current 10 gauge wire and a 40 amp breaker be sufficient?
