I have a small bungalow sized building which I essentially a hut.
They lost power and the DNO may not rectify for a while.
The building will need a temp generator and only needs 3kw of power, asides from checking up on the regs can anyone offer some advice through their own experience?

I'm sure your aware, but just in case, make sure you isolate the bungalow from the dno supply as someone fixing a fault down the line may not appreciate a sudden return of power from an unexpected source.

Just out of curiosity, as I don't know a lot about generators: Correct me if I'm wrong but generators run more efficiently at the top end of their rating, about 80% and above?
So how would you size a generator for a house when the power consumption is a lot different during the day than night? Yes you would have to size it for the max power used....
In the OP's case, they are using a 3kW gen. At night time the small bungalow may only be using about 300W (TV, TV box and lights). Except for when they are making a brew or course.... So isn't the gen running way under efficiency?

I had to do a changeover in a hospital we had a big genset for most of it but used the Honda inverter ones in some areas and agree they are a good set and quiet just the job for what you need I should imagine. What else you need to do will depend on the existing install

What was the site earthing system and how was the shed earthed? Any bonding?[/QUOTE]

So currently there is a TNS supply which has been isolated.
The mains bonds are connected to the MET for water.
No gas in building
