Hi guys,

I have been asked to install a thermostat on a friends boiler, i have noe experience with boilers at all, I am simply an installation electrician.

Haven't had a look at the boiler yet so dont know what it is or what thermostat he is buying, but just wondered how difficult it could be. I am fairly good at reading diagrams.

Wondered what are the basics for such an installation and do you guys have any tips?

Sorry it's a bit vague

Thanks

Craig

Well, you know it's just a switch.

If it's a combi type boiler then you find the terminal block and you'll probably see 2 terminals marked 'stat'.

There's normally a link between these terminals.

Remove the link and connect your thermostat to switch between these terminals.

If a programmer is in use then the thermostat link could be in the programmer, you'll find out when you get there.

You should download the user/installation manual for the boiler/programmer just to check for any manufacturer-specific requirements.

PS If it's not a combi then I'll look for your post tomorrow!

try a wireless unit if there is a need to run cables to far,icarpets/boards up etc,its a more quick and cheap alternative, and check to see if the roomstat is required to be 230v or 0v contacts as that could have consequences.

If you have the boiler install instructions it is a doddle. even bigger doddle if it a wireless stat like mine. some stats require just a 2wire 1.0 t&E, but agree with others always put a 3 core in just in case, especially if you are running stat cable before boiler has even been bought.

Cheers.......Howard
