To the OP, definetely not one to emulate, skipping IR is bad enough, but not doing the functional checks to make sure everything works is not something i would want my name anywhere near.
TBH - until now i had not heard of Cus being changed without access to circuits, there appears to be no depths to poor workmanship

a calamity of mine that sticks in the mind..........

chasing out cable run in a kitchen , hammer flies out of hand and smashes through halogen hob
it was the only thing in the house worth more than £20.
some days its not worth even getting out of bed.

as for testing , i've sent plenty of electronic dimmers to an early grave

:-D

Your boss is an idiot as above their are other steps you can take, a damaged cable could be a fire hazard long before it trips an rcd.... remember the pvc is usually rated to 70c and can maintain much higher temps for a short duration which as ive just said could be a fire hazard if not health hazard from fumes.

Get your boss to read this thread he might learn something about electrics.... plus the insurance will be void if these tests are found to have been faked or skipped....
Landlords will have spare keys they have the right to gain access through arrangement for the purposes of repairs, testing etc ive done this for yrs and only time access was an issue is lost keys or tenant in bed leaving key in door but only a small delay.
Can't believe the guidance you are been given on your leaning curve into this career by your boss.... tell him MacDonalds are hiring :rolleyes2:

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have my level 3 and what I learned on this and pure "instinct" told me that some of the stuff we've been doing is cutting corners. My boss isn't a very easy guy to get along with, so it's difficult to navigate around this without him spitting the dummy. My instincts and your replies are telling me to get away from him. Easier said than done in the current climate, and I would still want a reference from him. Decisions, decisions

I think the OP needs to find a new employer. You are going to learn all this clown's bad habits if you stick with him. Harsh but true. If you want to be a real spark you have to learn from a real spark first of, not some muppet who skips essential tests because it suits.

same boat mate, its trcky, the guy im with a lot doesnt even have his 16th and still cuts corners, the only one that really even shows you how to do things is probably leaving soon and the other guy has been subbing for years and is near the end of his tether.

remember what he is doing is wrong buy watch as it will prove invaluble when you qualify and you have to fix his ilks **** work.

if your ever on site and spot another sparky don't be afraid to ask them if you get the chance if you don't understand what they are doing. a lot will explain if they are not very busy

Read latest ESC magazine issue 29,re Emma Shaw death, and see what the two fellas (about maybe your bosses experience?) have been charged with NOT doing properly. A job is either completed correctly or it is not. Do not let your age or politeness allow you to be the man NEXT to the man who gets lifted.Happy trails...

Cheers. Yeah, the guy I'm with is a bit of a nightmare tbh. Not saying I'm the finished article or know it all( far from it, long way to go) but, when you ask him anything - he acts as if you have asked him it for the 200th time( trust me I don't). He finds it hard to articulate himself, which just infuriates him even more, so as any kind of learning environment it's pretty poor. An example is last week - we're fitting a downstairs ring (CU in basement) I asked him from which sockets the legs were going down to the CU (thought it was a fair enough question) - he just acted like a total d##k. It just gets to the point now where I don't even want to ask him anything, as any little thing sets him off on one. He obviously hates his job, and as from the replies in this thread, it seems it shows in his work. Really thinking about trying to find something else now. Easier said than done
