When marking/ sleeving eg switch cable and swa to mark what conductor it is, i have always used sleeving, does the regs allow insulation tape to mark/identify the cable?

you could always use numbers? can also use letters e.g l1 L2 L3 etc N

we use these

Colour Coded Heat Shrink Cable Markers, Heat Shrink Cable Markers, Cable Markers

be careful asking for them in wholesalers, numbers from a french or german origin use different colours

Insulation tape is generally not recommended because it has the tendency to unwind itself and come off over time.
BS7671 only says that sleeving should be to BS3858, but this does not preclude using insulation tape since it is not sleeving!!
If it has been used then OK it is identified but if you have the chance change it for a fixed method of identification, numbers, rings, labels, sleeves, etc.

Good idea but in confined spaces eg light switch enclosures where tight does anyone else use insul tape, ive always used sleeving, in tight spaces it can be a pain.

A piece of sleeving less than a millimetre thick isn't going to make a great deal of difference in a switch box

Just haven't really thought about it, and sometimes the sleeve falls of, so just thinking of alternatives, seems like i have now though thanks,

What is insulation tape really used for as if you do things as said , I've only ever used it for keeping cables together and pulling through?

Im not worrying I'm just thinking, i have not said i do not worry about tape losing adhesive which i haven't thought about as i have never used it for that, i think maybe i have been using sleeveing thats been to big lately being the problem, a very small issue but one i thought id ask.

Reg 514.3 I think.
If you want something more secure then you can use heat shrink, but a bit of a hassle for a quick marker.
If you have two cables for the same terminal and both need sleeving then cut the sleeving half way through and slip the part cut ends over each core then the cables will stop the sleeving slipping, or use thinner sleeving.

Why do people assume on here, when wiring in an extractor fan and putting in a 2 way switch on a couple of occasions the sleeve have fallen of, you went there so why be rude or sarcastic, or even just guess why not ask how it fell of, like i said it was a tiny tiny tiny problem but i just wondered what other ways of marking their was, thanks for all those who wasn't rude and helped and had reasonable responses.
