Funny callout on Sunday. Kitchen ring breaker cutting out and sometimes resetting and sometimes not.
Householder explained that this had been happening for over a week.
Each night around ten the breaker tripped and wouldn't reset but when the owner came back from work the next day about 6pm it reset OK, just to breakdown around 10pm again.
Five double sockets above the worktop and a fused outlet under the worktop for the washing machine on the ring.
Only thing running at the time of the cutout was the fridge.

Interested in your thoughts about what could cause this. It took a while to figure it out.

I will post the solution when I've heard a few of your theories.:)

it could be a faulty kitchen appliance, that happened me before with a tumble dryer, somtimes it would trip and somtimes it wouldnt, take all the appliances out and then see if it stays on,or take all the sockets off and check connections, good luck with it.

You little tease:p

My pennys worth is: was an outside light controlled by a PIR spured from the ring so that when he let his dog out the faulty fitting tripped the breaker?

it is either an appliance with a time clock or a pir sensor spured off the ring or else they could be a sceond circuit taken off the same mcb, it would be wise to check, just to remove the cover of the consumer unit to check, you should never take it at face value that it is only one circuit per mcb.

Just thought it might be interesting to any of the theory sparks.
All the practical experience I've had from 1961 until I retired a couple of years ago and I hadn't come across this one.
A spark was there before me and decided that the wireing was tired and he would rewire the house for only ÂŁ2500. Owner thought he might be wrong as the house was wired in 1999 and give me a call to see if that could be true.
I called up on Sunday evening just to have a look and confirmed that the wireing was in excellent condition and that whatever was causeing the fault was within that one circuit.
There was no timers anywhere on the ring, no PIRs, no spurs off the ring, Fridge pulled, no gravity faults, and nothing plugged in any of the sockets.
Bear in mind that I called in the evening so the circuit was working with no apperant fault to find.
One answer above pointing very vaguely towards the problem.
I'll tell ya all tomorrow.
