Funny callout on Sunday. Kitchen ring breaker cutting out and sometimes resetting and sometimes not.
Householder explained that this had been happening for over a week.
Each night around ten the breaker tripped and wouldn't reset but when the owner came back from work the next day about 6pm it reset OK, just to breakdown around 10pm again.
Five double sockets above the worktop and a fused outlet under the worktop for the washing machine on the ring.
Only thing running at the time of the cutout was the fridge.

Interested in your thoughts about what could cause this. It took a while to figure it out.

I will post the solution when I've heard a few of your theories.:)

hehehehe wasn't expecting that one! i hope you washed your hands after changing that socket front yuk hehe!

Just shows that all the answers aren't in the BRB or any of the other exams that people need to call themselves a spark now. You only come across stuff like this in a practical situation, and as said before, I'd never come across it in nearly 50 years on the tools.

I found the fault within half an hour but wouldn't have known why it was happening without the helpful assistance of the cat coming in and the householders comment that it always came in about that time.
Being the only outlet that was under the worktop and partially out of sight and in the dark, no one had noticed the tell tail marks on the wall above the outlet.

And yes I did wash the hands, Well.:)

Well thats one for the history books!

Funny thing is though, is that cat pee REALLY stinks so im surprised the home owners werent aware of it.

Still all sorted now eh :)

Jason, As said back there^^^^ the owners were aware of it as it had been going on for about a week and had started throwing their own cats out because they thought it was them. They didn't know where it was happening. They just hadn't thought of pulling out the white goods.
The previous spark had said it was the smell of melting insulation so the house needed rewired.
Oh well, he didn't get paid and I did.
