Andekoch. One thing I noticed is you should put your telephone number and contact details in large writing right at the top. People dont want to scroll forever to find your number

You can download a start up version of serif's webplus software for free, very easy to use, just limited to a 5 page web site, after a couple of weeks you should get an e-mail offering you the full version for ÂŁ29.00. They also have a good forum with some very helpful people on it.

These kinds of page generator can be very good for an initial website, but they tend to make "sloppy" SEO optimised pages, sadly.

Your own front page, and possibly others, for example - a hundred lines of "Head" code, and only 80 or so of content.

What this means in real terms is that your content score will be very low when Google, for example, looks at it, and their search algorithms won't necessarily score it highly for relevance - no matter how good your keywords and other META tags are.

Typically, I think the ratio of content to code should be a minimum of 15% text/HTML - with as much content as near the top of the "page" as you can - the advice being to call external CSS and script pages in place of sticking it all on page.

I agree they will never do the same job as a good web designer but i think my seo is ok for an amateur and a site that was created 2 if not 3 years ago, I must admit it could do with a total redesign.

When i do a search on google for electrician and any of the towns i cover i am on the first page of google if not the first line under the paid for adds. Any advice to improve things is always appreciated as long as its at a very simple level and dose not require any coding.

I have been told that links back to your site from others is a good way to improve your google score, is that correct? also how do yahoo and bing score site?
cheers

hifly, you are right, relevant back links are good for the search engines. Beware though that having your web site link on a pet supplies web page will do absolutely nothing :)

Regards

I find this all very confusing, I am with vista ( i know its crap) but cant do owt as apparently they own my web address. what does link referal do exactly? just get you hits on your site? and if so does that get you up the listings?
Paul.

the best way to get high on the listings is to have good content on your site in html text so google can read it,

give your pages relivant names not just page 1 page 2 ect, use words on your index page that people searching will use, e.g. "electrician devizes"

if you are looking for local work then name the local towns on the home/index page not just a bunch of words but in a sentance,

have links to your site from other sites that have the same sort of info i.e. electrical,

join a number of electrical forums and have your web address in your sig, post on these forums so you have a lot of links to your site.

Maybe do a deal with others on the forums for cross linking on each others sites.

give all picture an alt title as i belive google reads them as well.

Sites that offer you back links are as waste of time as far as i am concerned

this only my view, i am far from a web designer but the above has seemed to work for me.
