Discuss Interpretation of BS 7671 ? in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

I completed my 7671 Amendment 1 a few months ago and someone thinking I was the font of all knowledge asked me a question which I couldn't answer :frown:

He is currently building a garden room that is attached to his house and he's put a conduit in to take the ring main which will come up through the floor on the inside wall. Due to the fact its an internally pitched roof, before he completes the floor, he wants to know whether he needs to put conduit in the floor and bring it up to FFL at the position of each low level socket or can the electrician come up to the first socket say at 450mm and then run the ring horizontally around the room? My interpretation of 522.6.101 is that he can but it doesn't seem the safest way to do things i.e. I would run the cable up into the high level 150 zone and drop down to each socket rather than have the bother of sinking conduit in the floor. Hope this makes sense .. any advise would be gratefully received.

Alan

as long as safe zones are adhered to, both ways are acceptable. personally, i would prefer to come from above and use horizontal runs where sockets are fairly close together.

Either way is ok, prescribed zones as everyone else said. I'm guessing there won't be that many sockets in there, two doubles maybe? May be easier to conduit from point to point if you're putting some in anyway?

Can I quickly thank your guys (girls) for the quick replies, help and the consensus .. just making sure I interpreted them correctly due to the fact I've never seen a ring installed in that way :) .. consider the thread closed. And Guitarist the course certainly made sure you got that message which is somewhat different form the past. Cheers Alan

The only issue with horizontal runs comes when there is a door or doorway between 2 sockets then up and over is the way to go.

but remember to go up directly from a socket to within 6" of ceiling, not, as i have seen a couple of times behind the door architrave.

Not quite sure what you are saying here Alan.

I'm saying that when I went on the course the instructor drummed it into us that you couldn't run cables through the cavity except horizontally and protected .. therefore agreeing with what you were saying .. and I have seen cables run down cavities in the past. No offence meant and hope none caused .. :)

All makes sense in that context. The rewire we are just finishing off looked as though it was all conduit when we quoted, then we checked sockets on outside walls and they were all chucked down the cavity which was subsequently filled with insulation... Time for the chaser... :)
