Well I joined this site a couple of years ago after being made redundant and looking for ways into the industry/courses/etc.

I pretty much forgot about it but came back recently.

Luckily for me, last year I gained a place on Network Rail's 'Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme' (10k people applied for 200 positions!) in the Electrification & Plant discipline, which I started in September, completed the first year of technical training (with a distinction in every unit- go me!) and now learning on site with the gangs for 2 years.

This was a most welcome break for me, although a pay cut in the short-term a serious step forward long-term, effectively a career for life.

At the grand age of 27, doing an apprenticeship has had is challenges both financially and by lack of responsibility but at least I'm heading in the right direction.

Over the course of the next 2 years I will be topping up my qualifications (courtesy of NR) to include NVQs in railway engineering and BTECs in electrical disciplines, not the mention 2330 and 2291 or whatever the testing and inspecting new works is called. I'm hoping to do the main, more useful testing and inspecting module if anyone could tell me the name of it?

Anyway, I'm keen to talk to anyone who works on the railway and hopefully this forum will be a fitting reference point for much of my work over the years to come.

Welcome along.

I did a good stint on the railways a few years ago and have to say, really enjoyed it.

The insp & test qual is the C&G 2391-10.

1MR hello there old chap !

I know you/see you posting on another forum I frequent - good to see your enjoying what your doing. A modern apprenticeship/career change is something i'm looking into but tbh any reduction in salary just isnt an option for me anymore.

I'm sure when you get to do the 2391 with your nvq's and btec training it wont be daunting at all, anyone doing any regular testing will breeze the practical, its just about reading the questions fully and correctly in the theory (as well as putting the correct answer ofc!)

Hey capita! What forum and what is your username on it?! PM me if you prefer!Re: 2391, I can't remember which one is testing and inspection own work, and testing and inspecting existing work . NR only initially give you the lesser one (which isn't very useful as 95% of the kit I'll be working on is legacy or installed by someone else! So plan is to pay for it myself.

Welcome to the forum!

The 2392 is the 'lesser' testing qualification, 2391-10 is where it's at in terms of value in the employment market.
