It will show up during an insulation resistance test, but what is showing up ?

The correct meter for the job is required to measure values that could be a dead short or a load to earth with the functional earth of the Rcd

Using an insulation resistance tester when this type of Rcd is in circuit will not indicate whether there is a short or there is a functional earth

Thats why a couple of thousand of ohms reading on the insulation resistance tester is not a means to determine whether there is a fault or whether it is a functional earth

The rcd needs to be dis connected

ok so went back today, took the megger 1552 instead of the fluke this time, listened to everyones advice and did a full retest, every reading was fine until the dreaded ring final insulation test, i removed the cables from the c/u so the rcd wouldn't affect the reading, tried the normal tests L-N, L-E & N-E and got a 0.00 reading, the utility room has built in white goods which can't be disconnected so i joined L-N then tested to earth and still a 0.00 reading.

i took a few socket faces off and found some without earth sleeving, so could it be that L-N test is picking up the white goods as a load to get that 0.00 reading, then when i'm connecting L-N together because i'm testing to an earth with missing sleeving i'm still getting a 0.00 reading? or am i barking completely up the wrong tree? if so whats the solution? thanks.

Hi Steve
I think the white goods in the utility room are giving you the false reading. Why won't they let you unplug them or at least switch them off at the socket for a short period to carry out the IR test?

hi pjb, unfortunately they're all built in with the sockets behind them, and they don't want me to dismantle everything, thats why i tried the l-n connected method.

o dam u got things plugged in, well i never
well as i connected L-N together and tested to earth, what difference does the load make?!?

if you were as intelligent as you clearly think you are you would have enriched us with an answer not just sarcasm, but as your not you may as well just jog on!

As I said steve you won't get correct reading for and IR test with item connected to the circuit under test. Make a comment on the test sheet saying unable to carry out test cause customer doesn't want damage to his precious kitchen.

cheers pjb, thats what i'll do.

They ought to be able to check for the voltage going completely off using one MCB off at a time to confirm that. That would be my assumption...
