Irish qualifications

I know there are a few Irish sparks on here so thought i would post in this forum.Can you clear something up for me.When you do an apprenticeship in the south do you study for the junior and senior trade certificate and when you get them are they for the subject of electrical engineering or electrical installation?Also do you sit the city and guilds parts one and two or is that optional?Cheers in advance

I did the junior trades after 2 years and seniors after 4. It changed after about 1998 or so.I always say they made it easier. I've heard of some doing  city and guilds but it is not mandatory. I did 13 weeks a year in college the rest with my employer. The subjects are electrical science,craft practice,craft theory and planning. I do remember it being quite difficult and I did put a lot of work to pass.From what i remember you could only resit them once. Every now and then i stumble across my notes and I haven't a clue how I passed.Hope this helps.....

The only reason i asked was because an Irish spark at work showed me his certs from Athlone college and it said department of electrical engineering on it thats why i wondered if you were classed as an electrician or electrical engineer

At least in Southern Ireland they don't entertain in any shape or form, ....17 day and electrical trainee!! So electricians are actually electricians still, ...and not just wannabe's that have been let loose on the domestic general public!! lol!!

Our certs are issued through a third level college,but we are sparks.When I came out of my time a sparks was a great trade. Our union was strong and we had great conditions.The union then joined with the fitters union and it all went south. The boom certainly didn't do the trade any good as every thing was basically thrown together and there are some very poor electricians trained in Ireland through no fault of there own. Is the Irish sparks any good????

Yeah he is a very good spark.He has got a senior trade certificate whatever that is

Probably equivalent to the UK's ''Approved'' electrician!!

The junior and senior trades is the old system. The newer system is a four year apprenticeship with 7 phases 4 of these are on the job and 3 are in college after this you get a national trade certificate for the trade of electrician.

I worked in Dublin for 4 months & the standard of work I saw was pretty good to be honest.

It used to be the same in the UK, .....Alas that can't be said anymore with the horrendous influx of the 5 week wannabes, that have been let into the UK's electrical industry through the back door!!
