I always wonder how even ''17th Edition'' board meet the reg 314-1 and 314-2 and particularly if you look at TT systems as mentioned above. If you aren't supposed to let a fault on one circuit affect another circuit then only individual rcbo's will meet the regs totally. .............. let the discussion begin:eek:

coz its a complete new installation it needs to be dual rcd or rcd/rcbo
if you are just adding a new circuit or working on just a part of an existing install with existing single rcd main switch then i belive you are ok.

its obviously clear that there are grey areas, thats why so many skilled peeps on here cant stamp a fist and give a direct answer, because there isnt one. Nothing stopping you adding an RCD to a board though to split it. I work on the lines of if cable new colours, must be rcd protected. Dont try putting proteus rcbos in a volex board. you have a five mil gap between the top of them and the earth and neutral bars. I did it but had to rewire the whole board coming up behind the din rail with all wires. Cost more in labour than a new board . But when a Bloke is determined !!!!!!...

"Avoid hazards and minimise inconvenience" pretty much covers the reason NOT to use a 30mA RCD as blanket coverage.

If one was used, it tripped, and the homeowner broke their neck/arm/leg etc on the journey to the CU in the dark, then this could be used against you in court if it ever came to it.

Not something i would risk.

I usually install a High Integrity Dual RCD Board as standard. That way the lights are totally seperate on RCBOs and the rest divided between the Two RCDs. Split load boards with one RCD may still be useful if your running several submains in SWA, you can then put RCBOs on your lights and the rest of the circuits on the One RCD.

NEWLEC RCBO/MCB fir perfect into a Volex CU (apparently made by same company)

i would love to go to court and here how he intends to sue you..!

yes your honour i was using my wife's hair dryer that i dropped in to the bath as i had just electrocuted my self from when i changed the plug so was bit twitchy! i blame the spark who made it clear that my penny pinching would ultimately result in my RCD tripping every thing in the house!

So what happens if the piece of equipment he has plugged in is faulty without his knowledge? I.e. the missus has dropped the hairdryer and not plugged it in again, doesn't know it has an earth fault, and he happens to be the first to plug it in. Not necessarily his fault, probably not hers either as things do get damaged.

Work to the regs and you know that you're safe...
