is it ok and within the regulations to earht a gas meter by using a earth rod and taking a 10mm earth from the rod beside the meter to the pipe?
(on a PME)

i do its just the plumber. he says its only going to go to earth anyway but my response is it dont follow the correct earth fault loop path

Tell the plumber he doesn't know what he's talking about. What value of "earth" is it going to go to anyway? Not the same as the PME earthing in the house that's for sure.
The point of bonding is to ensure that all extraneous conductive parts are held at the same potential under earth fault conditions.

Metal supply pipework is already earthed, by virtue of being buried in the ground.
Further earthing of the pipework by means of a rod is pointless, and something only a plumber would suggest.
Equipotential bonding connects any metal pipework, or other earthed metal items to the installation main earth.
This equalises the potential between the installation main earth and the earthed pipework and earthed metal items.
If you don't equalise the potential, then any fault current on one will flow to the other if given a path. Such a path could be a person.
By bonding everything together, fault current will not flow, as it's already there by virtue of being connected by the bonding.

You gotta love plumbers......
Is the difference between bonding and earthing sooo hard to get a grasp of?
I had the same thing with a company recently. Muppets!!

Where does the gas pipe emanate from? .... out of the ground, so one would assume that it is at earth potential already.
Where does the earthing conductor connected to the PEN emanate from? The suppliers transformer and neutral bonds at various neutral links along its way.
The neutral 'earth' is now likely to be at a potential other than earth potential.
Now place a P-PE fault on the system. What potential could you imagine would appear on the installation's metalwork?
Then disconnect the supplier's neutral and turn on some appliances. What voltage is likely to appear on the metalwork?
and what path will the current take to get back to the transformer?

So, if all the metalwork is raised to the same potential then the likelihood of a shock when touching two extraneous/exposed conductive parts will be minimized. If however, you are standing on an extraneous wet floor without shoes while hanging on to a metal pipe/exposed conductive part then......

Dantheman, you asked the question - can't blame the plumber here. Surely some logic and basic electrical knowledge would tell you, without even looking at regs, that the earth rod to "bond" incoming service to an earth rod is pointless. What did you think it could achieve?

Spinlondon gave the perfect answer, I just have no idea on what you where thinking?
