Discuss Is it aceptable to earht a gas meter using a earth rod?? in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Put simply Dan the idea of bonding is that if every metal surface that could become live is connected together(bonded) then if the worst happens everything becomes live and therefore is at same voltage, and thus as there is nothing at zero volts to touch you cannot get a shock, unless you happen to be touching something from outside the area, anyone remember the case years ago when the window cleaner was killed as he cleaned an aluminium window? metal windows used to be bonded and there was a fault and everyone in the house was ok due to the bonding but as he was outside he was electrocuted. put simply its like a faraday cage as long as your in it you don,t get a shock touch it from outside and you can.

Dantheman, you asked the question - can't blame the plumber here. Surely some logic and basic electrical knowledge would tell you, without even looking at regs, that the earth rod to "bond" incoming service to an earth rod is pointless. What did you think it could achieve?

Spinlondon gave the perfect answer, I just have no idea on what you where thinking?

the plumber is my uncle and hes been earthing gas pipe work using earth rods and i neede to prove a point he wouldnt take it from me or the regs book

Just explain you don't earth!! You bond.
I would have thought you could explain this.
The gas pipe comes out the earth to start with!!!
Where abouts in the uk are you doing this?
