You need indemnity insurance full stop, it covers you for your judgement/professional opinion. I would not pay any scheme just to have their logo on my PIR report, that's all your be paying ÂŁ250.00 for imo, stuff that.

Is that the same as public liability insurance? Or am i being stupid?
Iv got 2 mill PL insurance. As you can imagine "Every pounds a prisoner" at the mo :)

Hi mate, as has been said you don't need to be with a scheme, in fact if you are only planning on doing PIRs I wouldn't recommend one. I am with a scheme but don't pay the extra to do PIRs with them (all they give you is the logo as far as I can tell, seems pointless).

You have said that you've had a bit of a problem getting a quote, though, and also you say you've just got your 2391. What experience do you have? I would say to be doing PIRs you really need to have quite a bit of experience in inspection, and you will find a lot of companies won't give you PI insurance if you don't have at least 3 and normally 5 years experience in your trade...... You may find someone but you may find it's pretty expensive.

just to reiterate what has been said, though, PI is ESSENTIAL if you're doing PIRs, so regardless of what you get quoted you need to have it.

It isn't mate. What you need to do PIRs is 'Professional Indemnity' insurance, a minimum of 250000 (for domestic) but you'd be advised to go for more. Usually your PL insurer can put it on your package as an add on

Hi Rocker. I've been working as a sparky since I was 15 and I am now 24, passed the 2330, 2382 and 2391 which I have completed in the last 3 years. I cant say I've had that much experience doing PIRs other than a few for who I sub contract for and at collage. I've had alot of experience in the Installation and maintenance side of things and have done alot of fault finding.

Do you think that you would loose work without their logo?

Another thread touched on this topic. It said that because you are not giving 'professional' advice but making a 'report' PI Insurance or any insurance for that matter is not needed..

I would say anyone offering a periodic report is giving their professional advice upon the installation and making recommendations regarding it
