hi all new this forum, and I have a question
.. I’m looking to buy a house and the incoming mains and meter are in a cupboard on the exterior side wall. But there is no direct access to it other than asking the neighbors permission to enter their garden to read it. My question is, is it possible to move it to inside the property I am looking to buy, making meter reading etc easier..
Or could I just get some tails from the main fuse through the wall, into an isolation switch, then the relocated meter, then into the consumer unit.. thanks in advance

Rob

Unfortunately this equipment can't be moved by an electrician. As even though it's part of your house you do not own it.

You will have to contact you're DNO, (Distribution Network Operator) to do this job for you.

They will move it, but they aren't the cheapest.

I’ve had mine moved for free by sse before and I’m only down the road from you in Portsmouth, worth a call and explain the problem....

From a legal point your neighbour should allow access to read meter etc but give it time youll be coerced into having a smart meter so barely a need to go out and read it.
If you do have the meter moved they will try every trick to upgrade it to a smart one. They got targets to meet

To the O.P.
As this is a house you are proposing to buy, you need to bring this the attention of your Solicitor.
They need to check and establish whether you have a written right of access via the neighbours property.
If not the seller needs to either pay for that to be established or pay for the costs of alteration which will involve the DNO, the Energy supplier and an Electrician.

It's not a problem for the DNO or Energy supplier (meter owner), they already have legal right of access to their equipment and services.

Many people with so called smart meters report that they still have to give readings.

We've got smart meters and still have to have the gas meter read because it's too far away from the coms hub which is of course powered by the electricity meter. Anything over about 5m between the gas and electric and it starts to become a problem.
