Hi,

I am thinking to do some PAT test. A friend is good at that. I believe i can persuade him to show me how to do it. But do i need to pass the c&g 2377 to be qualified, or just do it with the open book exam?

cheers

It must be carried out by a COMPETENT person how would you prove that without the qualification and your other problem would be who would insure you without the qualification.

Be wary

Acat is correct it states that you should be competent, it does not require that you are a qualified electrician, therefore anyone can sit the exam and then set up a pat testing company.

the course is very easy and not too expensive, so why not take the plunge,

well, i have passed other exams like 2382, 2391, the reason i want to avoid the course is because it is like ezzzekiel said, it is very simple. why cannot i buy some books and learn it by my self?

Nothing stopping you doing that providing you can prove you are competent. The problem comes if you make a mistake and blow an appliance because you put 20amps through it instead of 200mA the fact that you are not qualified gives your insurance company a way out and leaves you with the bill for damage loss of earnings etc etc.

Out of interest if you have 2391 etc would that class you as competent for PATs.
Only asking as i have never been sent on PAT course.

Obviously competence is subjective and it depends what is meant by it. In my opinion 2391 shows that you are conversant with inspection and testing, and therefore so long as you familiarise yourself with the requirements of the Code of Practice then there shouldn't be a problem. However, I took the 2377 anyway but that was probably more for my own interest than necessity.

Going on the previous PAT threads how qualified do you have to be to attach stickers to things:rolleyes::rolleyes:

On a serious note I would have thought a qualified spark would be competant enough to PAT test even for an insurance company if a claim was made

I think that the pat testing course should be taken as there is more to pat testing than sticking a sticker. I know people cheat , the same as testers who just put mock results in a box.

I dont think an average sparks knows enough about PAT testing to be competant in it..
