Hi there- does anyone here know if there's a UPS unit that exists that can supply power to other mains plugs, not just the 'kettle' plugs for peripherals? i.e. something that can be charged and stores electricity, into which you can plug a device with a mains 3 pin sockets when in an area with no mains sockets.

I asked maplin, and they cam up with this:
1000 VA UPS Energy Protector Free Delivery : UPS Uninterruptible Power Supply : Maplin
it's a 1000 VA UPS Energy Protector
However, it only supplies to the kettle leads for pc's and their peripherals!

If something like this does exist on a small scale- im not looking for a massive industrial power unit, just for supplying electricity to small household items, how much are they and where can I find them?

Many thanks in advance!

J

I dont think there is, even the huge one I work with all have IECs on the back, for servers etc.

what exactly are you wanting to power? I have a large unit at home, weighs in around 50Kgs, but can only supply its full 13A for a few minutes.

The other thing is, they can be power on without a mains supply present, (if that makes sense) batteries kick in when power is lost.

I would suggest a generator, if noise is a problem, the honda range is about as quiet as they get.

with both UPS and gennys depends on your power requirements the more power you want, the more they cost.

Would a four way extension with a "kettle" plug on not do the job with the ups from maplin? The only thing I would be concerned about is how long you could keep it unplugged with out it discharging / losing some power, as they are intended to be UNINTERRUPTED i.e. as the supply is lost the back-up kicks in , and from what I can gather your after a portable supply to use at your leisure.

Never seen a small unit but i have installed very large UPS giving 60KVA for half an hour, this supplies via a control panel a small consumer unit with two ring mains, thats the only units i have come across without kettle connectors.

I wonder if an inverter is what you require. They come with normal mains outlets. The battery capacity of the UPS will be quite small I assume. You can use large batteries with an inverter.

still really need to know what requires powering, an inverter that can supply 13A is £££ and the batteries to go with that to give any decent length of time off grid £££, the current draw at 12V would be huge, hence why larger UPS use 120V worth of batteries, carrying a bank of leisure batteries around to power it would weigh in quite a hefty figure in weight too.
