hi all,

i quoted a job today for £550, the job involves fuse board change (17th edition split board), kitchen rewire with 5 doubles sockets 2 spurs feeding dishwasher and washing machine and a seperate cooker circuit. Also taking a swa to garage with small board feeding 2 sockets and two flourecents. also to run lighting, power and a shower cable to loft for future loft convertion. i quoted £550 thinking this was a good price but got told i was a rip off merchant. is this a fair price?

I dont do domestic so havent realy got "pricing" head BUT I do know what stuff costs and you will bareley make anything Personaly id be telling him to go F.O.

What I received I got in a e-mail of a customer who I gave a quote too not so long back.

Thanks for your quote, I would like to accept it, you weren't the cheapest, but you were certainly the most professional
Goes to show that if you try and make a first impression you don't have to undercut yourself. I spent about a hour there carrying out tests to ensure I could carry out the work required and explained everything to the customer both verbally and in my quote.

9 out of 10 times I am told we weren't the cheapest, yet there we are doing the work... Either (a) you were the cheapest and client doesn't want to say so or (b) professionalism and good manners still count for something

I've always found the customers who want the cheapest possible job are a pain ,it always ends up costing you somewhere along the line , and in my experience they'll try and knock your rates down when you start the job , ie they say they're on a budget ,to which I tell them so am I and I might as well go home rather than working for free!
Do a good job and professional service and you'll always find work from people who'll appreciate their money is being well spent and they usually are a lot less hassle to deal with !

My wife's late Auntie was quite well-off and was always having various tradesmen in to do work around her property. I once overheard her telling someone that she always went with the highest quote as it must result in the best job. I wonder how many well-to-do older people actually live by this rule...

I remember changing a single to a double socket, charged him 25 pound and he tried to get out of it by saying he could buy a double socket for a pound at Wilkos, told them, well let me just put your single back and ya can get another to fit wilko one, that is the short story, much involved lol In the end, customers get what they pay for, they pay spurs, they will only get cowboys!!! Might not be cheapest, but a fair price for a professional job! That is all :-)
