Hi have to move a dis board and upgrade with new but confused a little bit
Its in a urban area a 1920`s semi detached house but cant see any overhead lines at all
I looked at the old school ELCB and thought TT , the main supply cable looks like old VR cable which is neatly clipped all round the house at high level , then looks to go in the other house joined to it down to there supply intake ( couldnt get access to look inside but cant see any overhead lines going to this house either

I looked in the dis board`s believing a 10 mm went out to the earth rod but that went to the water and in the other one to the gas but no earth from either board to an earth rod /stake/pit

Any help appreciated

Was a quick look tbh
Going back to do a proper quote ( new extension going in) soon and will get the MFT out
Wanted to see what other people thought ?
Teltrix you mentioned wp earthing is that earthing through the water pipe
I know the water pipe is being moved so will probably need a earth rod put it then

Oh yes , I suppose you will have to put in an earth rod if the water pipe is moving ,,,,,,,,OMG,,,,lol

There should be 2 earth wires at the VOELCB.One goes to the CU's and one goes out to an electrode...which more often than not consisted of a bit of galv conduit banged into the ground.
At the moment it's not any recognised earthing system....you will have to rectify that if work is taking place.

Thanks for your input
From memory and looking again at the pics there is no earth wire ( visibly) coming out of the ELCB
I Know it needs upgrading to comply so will be installing an earth rod
Just puzzled as well ,as no overhead lines and looks like the supply piggy backs off the neighbours supply which also has no overhead lines all TT systems i have been involved with before its been quite obvious that its a TT system

I'm not sure that's a VO ELCB though

Oh that's definitely a VOELB, no question, but i think this unit also incorporates a BS 88 or 1361 fuse, vagally remember a similar unit from the distant past.

Rompling, before you start messing about, get in touch with your local DNO, to find out if PME is available on the network distribution cable that supplies the road.

One of my houses was just the same as this one - linked from next door and no earth as such and no overhead lines.

The cable was brownish VIR and looked like a concentric sort of thing like a TV aerial CO ax cable ... but bigger!

THere was no VOLEB / RCD or anything else - just a lump of 6mm GY wrapped around the lead water pipe under the sink.

That is an early Crabtree RCD. You'll find when you remove the cover there will be large copper coil inside. Crabtree broght these out in late sixties. I f there are floor boards downstairs then check there is no rod below I remember we were told that the rod could be buried inside as long as there was access and a label fitted beside cu indicating where it was.If I remember well I think you'll find it's rated at 500ma.

It doesn't always follow that over head means TT or the other way round! Far from it in fact.

village near here nearly house is TT. Not an overhead cable in sight.

Not saying your wrong, but i can't remember any RCCD's being around in the 60's, especially not for domestic installations. So unless this unit was retrofitted at a much later date i'd still plumb for the unit that i'm thinking of. Though i must say, i can't see any earth cables entering the unit in the photo... We'll just have to wait and see for when the OP goes back....
