Hi all,

I wondered if you could give us your thoughts on our friend's installation? I've included some photos. We're sure that there's something wrong with it, but we wanted some expert opinions.

Here's a bit of background:

An electrician changed the original split distribution board and carried out an EICR. Prior to the CU change, the upstairs and downstairs lighting was on two separate circuits and apparently, the lightbulbs would often blow. That's not the case now. The tariff is just on a flat rate, so our friend doesn't benefit from lower tariff through the night.

Can you tell us if all looks correct here?

I would wonder about the earth cable from the supply cable and hope thats not a BS951 clamp on a lead cable,i would also question why the gas pipe is not bonded (it could be not needed if supply is plastic)

I've uploaded a close up of the clamped earth cable. I'll try and get a better photo. I'm not sure if the gas pipes are plastic, but I'll check. Thanks for your reply.

A few things

Not sure what that green cable next to the Gas meter is doing that needs investigating. Gas pipe has an Earth clamp but cannot see where the cable runs.

Consumer unit is a bit of a mess but not a safety issue in itself.

Oven circuit needs looking at we have 2 cables of different sizes terminated.

Lighting should have been left on 2 separate circuits now you will be in total darkness if RCBO trips. Looks like there is a B6 that is next to the lighting and is marked blank. I would hazard a guess you may have a shared neutral and so the lighting was put on one RCBO.

Cables need supporting at intake.

Do you have any paperwork?

Thanks for your thoughts so far. It sounds like someone is going to have to come out to correct all these problems.

As for paperwork, we assume that a copy of the EICR should have been left in the property. We will try to obtain a copy.

EICR and an EIC (Electrical Installation Certificate) for the board change hopefully with some test results.

He can apply for an E7 tariff with or without storage heaters. It depends on his electricity usage profile on whether this is a good idea or not...
