HARRYSPADGE

Over the past week or so I have found myself visiting this forum on a daily basis, interested in what I could learn and increase my knowledge of electrics.
I have a very sound knowledge of electrics and electrical theory but not being a 'competent' electrician in many of your eyes I thought I could increase my knowledge on the subject in general.
After spending some time viewing the different topics and questions being asked I can safely say that I don't think I've ever visited a forum this un-friendly !
From what I have read on here it seems blatantly obvious that you 'time-served' sparkles hate anyone who has the audacity to put themselves through any type of short course.
My background for the last 20 years was the motor trade, I was a 'Master Technician'. In my time in the trade I met many people, some of which had been in the trade a hell of a lot longer than me, and I can assure you being 'time-served' is not the be-all and end-all.
some of the guys I have worked with that were in the trade for almost double the time I was didn't have even an ounce of the knowledge I have !
There seems to be a small 'posse' or 'club' of individuals who seem to latch on to a particular type of question and then just give the OP Nothing but grief !
From the questions, and preceding answers that I have read, I realise that some of them can be a little surprising. He'll, even I know the answers to some of them.
But what niggles me is the slating given to some of the OP's that are asking a question for clarification. The small minority seem to attack the OP rather than offering friendly advice - answers in the realms of 'are you competent' or 'what qualifications do you have' seem to be the norm.
I realise that qualifications and experience play a big part in any job role but occasionally surely it's ok to ask for some friendly advice without getting your head chewed off.
in my opinion surely its better to ask for advise than not bother at all and then make a monumental F*** UP knowingly or un-knowingly. I know in my time in the motor trade I'd rather have people ask for clarification or be given clarification where needed, so why not with the electrical trade ?
I realise also that there are plenty of idiots out there doing there own electrical work, some of which have the least bit of knowledge about what they are doing, and this can be pretty scary and dangerous. I also realise it can get very frustrating to be asked stupid questions time after time, but I feel that this is no excuse to barrack some of the OP's that are asking seemingly sensible questions.
I feel I may get some grief from this post, but I'm prepared for that and I've also learn't about the hated culture of the Electrical Trainee's - (I'm kind of assuming that stands for 5 week W*****S !) but I may be wrong.
I myself am considering taking a course or two to get me to a 'domestic installer' status, again, I know there are a few that would have mixed/low opinions of me should I pass said courses. But, I'm the type of person who takes on to consideration all the aspects that this may bring. I tend to go all out when learning something new, I have purchased the 17th edition regs, Electricians guide to the building regs, the current on-site guide and GN3 - see, I know all the lungi ;-)...
I've even purchased an MFT to play with so I can get used to its workings, and yes, I know how to use it safely and I deem myself 'competent' even if some of you guys don't !
I know this may seem like a ranting session, and how dare I being a newbie on here, but I just had to convey my feelings.
I have in the most part enjoyed the time spent perusing this forum, and I've learn't a thing or two, but I think some of you guys need to tone it down a little as it doesn't come across as a friendly forum unless your in the 'club' !
I think it would be nice to see a little more respect paid to some of the OP's, give people a chance, we all have to start somewhere. And finally, you'll not see any stupid/newbie questions from me, I prefer to read the books where applicable or find a friendly sparky local to me to ask questions if I can't find them elsewhere.
So there's my thoughts on the subject, I'm off to get my flak jacket and hard hat ;-)
Sorry if I've offended anyone, I wasn't looking to make any friends here anyway :-0

.....answers in the realms of 'are you competent' or 'what qualifications do you have' seem to be the norm.
There's 2 reasons for this, firstly we have a DIY area so those threads that are by unqualified people get moved into there, secondly I guess it helps to know qualification so you know what complexity you can pitch a reply at.

I realise that qualifications and experience play a big part in any job role but occasionally surely it's ok to ask for some friendly advice without getting your head chewed off.
If a post is belittling or insulting please report it and it will be dealt with.

You'll probably find a large contingent aren't in agreement but you won't get insulted or belittled...and it stands for WONDER, not the other word you guessed.

Well that's good to know ;-)

And, I'd like to add to my previous long winded post that I've seen some questionable things being carried out by so called 'qualified' sparkles that even I wouldn't be stupid enough to do.

I've also just seen a very good quote on another post that pretty much sums up what I'm trying to say. I'll find it and get back with a quote.

Maybe cut and run whilst the going is good, I'm sure your message was clear and the link's not necessary. Your opening post was already contentious and likely to get peoples backs up, it's certainly not friendly and constructive but I've allowed it to stand. You're welcome to ask your questions but if you're just going to troll for an argument then it's going to end badly.

Marvo, Is this being shown in the 'General Electrical Forum' as well ?
If not I feel it won't get the 'airtime' it would deserve......

Marvo, I can assure you I'm not here to troll or get people's backs up !
Being an open forum I thought I was free to express my opinion, wasn't trying to start a war, although I can see how it would appear that way.
I'm the last person looking for an argument. Maybe I should go elsewhere, as it would seem my first post has hit a nerve !
I don't understand how it could be taken as 'not friendly or constructive', I just gave an honest opinion of what I felt.

There's a redirect in the original forum you posted it in. It's not a General Electrical question so it's a ---- up between this forum, the Electrical Courses & Electrical NVQ's forum and the Chit Chat forum. Being one who enjoys an easy life I chose this forum where it's least likely to start WW3 if you turn it into a trolling exercise.

I've just looked up the meaning of 'trolling' and I can assure you that wasn't my intention, apologies if it appears that way.

Why kick off with a needless rant?

I agree, probably not the best opener I could have played, but I wanted to express the way I felt.
As I said previously, I wasn't trying to start a war or get people's backs up, so I apologise once again.
Just thought it would be good to get some constructive comments.
I don't think I've ever been on another forum and experienced so many negative comments in such a short time so thought I'd mention it.
If you'd like me to leave now just say the word and I'll be gone......

well, post decent thought out questions with possible sensible answers and you may be ok, but ask very basic questions and you will need a tin hat and a deep bunker

As I mentioned earlier, you won't find me posting any stupid questions, well at least I hope not anyway.
All I want to do is gain more knowledge from the more experienced without suffering a perceived b******ing ;-)
Off to find me shovel and a hard hat....
I really am a nice bloke really, but have been known to be a little grumpy sometimes :-(
