As others have said, most likely hospital operating theatres or intensive care units or other 'life support' systems.

The reason for this are because it is 'first fault' tolerant, it needs at least two simultaneous faults before it will trip or disconnect.

It is forbidden to be used for public supplies (at least in the UK), and is fault monitored and used under supervision.

Yes, Hospital operating theatres and some other medical rooms will use IT earthing systems.

In Operating theatres it will be a fully monitored IT earthing system, along with differentiation/separation of earthing connections. ..ie PA and PE. PE being electrical earths, and PA building and other earthing points. Both connected to there own earth bar at the supplying DB, connected/linked by a 16mm removable connection link.

Much more too it than that mind...lol!!! The new section in BS7671 on Medical Rooms, is almost a direct take off of VDE/DIN 0100/007... (i think that's the right vde/din number anyway..lol)

spark 68,
You will have earth fault monitoring & warning, but it is doubtful that you will have much disconnection of supply in the event of an, or possibly multiple earth fault (s) as this could kill someone! ;)

It depends a lot on the designer and other things within the design to provide protection, no a "simple" solution like much of 7671 pretends to be.
