Hi guys. I recently applied for a electrical apprentice and luckily a letter for an interview came through.
Now I'm currently 19years of age studying my 2330 level 3. Into the end of my course. Would that not make me too qualified to be a apprentice.
Just needs some information. What does I say if the guy interviewing me says' don't you think your a bit to qualified for a apprentice'
And secondly would like some tips on how to secure a top sparky job interview?! Keep into consideration I'm young and no experience. Well I know the guy interviewing me supports Manchester United as my cousin works for the company :p
thank you guys

Sparks job after you've served your time.
Just say you need the experience on the tools and want to learn the job fully and properly. Prove yourself and then.... Good luck
Oh, get hold of a Paul Scholes shirt, ask if it's OK to wear it at work, but don't wear it for the interview.

All the very best to you.

I enjoyed my apprenticeship, I hope you do.

Collage learning is all well and good, you need the practical experience. Here’s you’re opportunity! If you can get it, grab it!

What are you going for, industrial or domestic?

The good thing about that course is that it teaches how things should be done, but in the real world it's totally different, that's what I found when I did the same course, there's only so much they can teach you at the college, you need to know how to get floorboards up and how to get from a to b without destroying the place just to pull a cable in, good luck chap

Im just worried as the employer might think I'm to qualified to be an apprentice! I think it's both commercial and domestic. It's a big company called Mitie. The in charge of maintaining courts all around UK for I think they also so refurbishment.. Should I go in a suit? Mention my cousins works for the company? And that I also support Manchester United? Or is that the wrong move! I hope I get, things really ain't gone my way last couple of months and I just need a bit of luck for once in my life.

I would be tempted to go tidily dressed rather than a suit as you are not going for an office job. but ask your cousin what the standard for the company is. Forget football unless the interviewer brings it up or there is an opportunity to mention it in passing, e.g his office is covered in MU posters.

You need to convince him why you are going to be an asset to the company, you have already proven your interest, commitment and knowledge by getting to L3 so build on that as being an excellent grounding and you now need to learn the real world skills, don't be negative look for the positive answer to any question. e.g. You are not overqualified you have successfully sought education opportunities while looking for an apprenticeship as an electrician which is your career of choice and your L3 gives you the background knowledge to help you make a contribution to the company quicker.

Are you enthusiastic, reliable, conscientious, willing to work hard, want to learn more, want to get more qualifications in the future when you have acquired more skills? If so say so. Think about problems you have solved and how, mistakes you have made and learnt from and be prepared to explain these to the interviewer. Speak up so they can hear you and try to come across as confident but not cocky.

Do web research on good interview questions to get some idea of what you will be asked and rehearse some answers.

Do some research on the company, e.g number of employees, turnover, profit, head office, and ask questions about what you will be expected to do and your potential future in the company if they do not cover this.

I interviewed one guy and neither my colleague or myself could hear what he was saying despite asking many times for him to speak up. He may have been the best person for the job but we never found out.

Good luck

Tori,
Your current studies should count as a plus, totally agree with chrish, i.e. you need both college and experience, one is not much good without the other. Reading the posts on this forum it appears that you are very fortunate to be offered an interview for an apprenticeship. So as others have said do all the preparation you can. I think I would go in a suit or at least trousers shirt and tie!

nothing to add to the excellent posts alreasdy said. just don't wear a man. city or liverpool top. tidily dressed, and ffs wear polished shoes not bloody trainers.

I have 14months site experience working for a big firm as a painter and decorated ( don't rub it in, needed a job'
but considered I'm near the end of my level 3 and I bag the job, what year apprentice would he put me under? And what would I have left to study ? Apart from 17th edition..
Also how much would I be looking to earn? ( 19years old and 5months :D)??

Well thats his problem I wouldn't hold it against him

I would say you will start as a first year apprentice and your wages will reflect that.take it though, I loved every minute of my apprenticeship, it was for a big industrial company and was the best times of my life.
Good Luck
Jim
