can you through crimp a 1.5mm cable out with a 2.5mm? is there a reg on this?

not fused just normal blue. It is something i have come across while looking at something for a freind not something I have done. I know it to be bad practice but not sure if or what the reg is?

how about reducing the csa of a circuit without fusing down to protect the smaller conductor.

very naughty imo a blue crimp is for 2.5 and a red for 1.5 so a blue on 1.5 would not hold properly, and thats before we get into the differing current carrying capacities of the cables.

I got asked a similar thing recently - wanting to extend some old imperial cable with metric stuff so there isn't a direct equivelent.

I assumed that as long as you go up in size you avoid the fuse argument and a crimp plus solder would solve the "not a suitable size crimp" issue. Was I right?

Is this solid core cable???? or stranded and as phil d says .... 1.5 may suffer from poor crimping in a 2.5 crimp + additional info on situation to give a more useful direct answer.

What's all this about adding a fuse?

If the protection at the origin of the circuit is rated for the smaller cable, no need to stick an additional fuse in where the cable sizes change.

For example, you might choose to do a long lighting run in 2.5mm² to minimise voltage drop and then do the final few metres to fittings in 1mm² or 1.5mm² to make termination easy. If it's all on a 6A breaker, no problem.
