Hi

Doing a kitchen rewire next week and I just have a question if you don't mind answering it.

With each each socket would it be best practice to go round the kitchen in the ceiling and drop to each point vertically or drop to the first then go round the kitchen horizontally? i know either is acceptable but which is best?

The cables will all be chased into brickwork, capped and plastered over.

Many Thanks

IMO ones way is no worse or better than the other. Take each job as it comes.

All depnds on the layout and position of sockets and if you have any windows or doorways to contend with.

As above but think about the corners! and where people will drill holes later - like the kitchen fitter who will probably not be aware of safe zones!!

Personally, I always try to go vertically rather than horizontally. I know what the regs class as the "safe zones" but ask most members of the public which way cables run and they will tell you they go up from a switch or socket.

Trunking under units and chase up to sockets, if in an area with no units I always go up from socket then either run in ceiling if possible and if not then across at high level in prescribed zone. As already said, few people expect cables to run horizontally around a kitchen at socket hight and when I started as an apprentice it was drummed in to me for years that such methods are bad practice and shouldnt be used

Ive done horizontal before when needed; of course that chase can't be as deep.
I like all the ideas about trunking.
Regards, Dave

I've got a blank canvass so I've spoke to the guy today and told him to take the ceiling down as he's having the whole kitchen plastered anyway, so I'll chase up and go round in the ceiling. thanks again

If he's taking the ceiling down, sounds like you should make sure he adds downlights to his specification!

Funny how we all do that, up from the socket, along the ceiling and back down.

I also do the same or sometimes as mentioned, below in trunking.

But think about it, wouldnt it be better for Mr Kitchen fitter and his wall units if we just went horizontal!

horizonally from socket to socket above worktop is usually the better way to avoid kitchen fitters drilling cables, but i'm sure they'd soon learn of this practice and come up with a way of drilling there as well as above .

Think I do it as force of habit as that's how it always was. I remember serving my apprentiship I got a right telling off from the gaffer for going horizontal between sockets!

Same here mate. It does make sense to go horizontal between sockets. Just feels "wrong" somehow... Maybe because most of us don't actually agree with the "safe" zones.
