he means was it some know-it-all numpty in the pub, full of ale, told that the em's come off the fire alarm.

No problem, he's not a tool must just be getting his wires crossed! (no pun intended!)
 
Have actually done a office building were thet requested the em lights to be activated in the event of fire.
The setup was during normal opperation ems where off on normal non maintained. In fire condiction they were powered up on maintained connection via contactors. Idea was if power failed ems come, in fire event ems come on. We thaught over the top but building control and fire officer want corridors lite after hours in fire condition automatically with or without power loss
