Evening
ive been testing an installation of new lampposts where some bollard type lights were removed and torpedo jointed to replace with lampposts or remove the lights completely. Now here's the problem the wiring is all buried in the ground 3way torpedo joints have been made beside the lampposts with one of the 3 ways feeding the post. I've found a series of low insulation resistance results but now need to try and rectify and identify the joint to repair.
Is there going to be an easy way to find this? Wander lead method from the feeder pillar to each post ?
any help appreciated
ta

Dig it all up and replace?

How is a wander lead going to help with low IR?

Seriously though if its all buried and continuous via joints then you have a small problem on your hands. Hopefully the client has deep pockets.

Yes most of the joints are all continuous. Bare with me but if I was to have a L-E fault connect the wander lead to the live of the circuit then go to each post and record the reading then the lowest result is closet to faulty joint ?

Break the cable run into aprox half it's length (Isolating it first of course) test each leg, eliminate the good leg, repeat until you find the fault. simples

Thanks but not so simples. Cannot break the circuit unless you dig up a joint then another etc. want to avoid digging up anything as much as possible as have 10 faulty circuits and numerous joints.

1st course of action,
Find the F***king jointer and bury him (them) next to one of his joints.

The only fool proof way of locating IR faults on a circuit is to break it down.

Try disconnecting all the loads and retesting if you haven't already. It sounds unusual that you have faults on multiple circuits.

Otherwise you need start digging up joints.

If you have 10 faulty circuits with numerous Torpedo joints, then i'd say it's maybe time to start looking at replacing the bloody lot!! You're going to be on a hiding to nothing for a long time, trying to locate the faulty joints without breaking into the cable. Who knows, all the joints may be crap!!

Can't see any other way mate life's a bitch

After 6 years working in the highways electrical sector i can catergorically state the is no way to locate faulty cable joints without a sh*t load of digging up at some point.

however getting your hands on a signal generator and cat scanner wil dramatically speed up the fault finding.
