I've shamelessly put this thread here rather than tools as I want to try to tap as many of the industrial brains as possible! Oh, and it's also not electrical!
Been asked for a suggestion by my lil' bro' who does precision calibration of industrial kilns for a UK firm operating globally:
They use a laser to get precision measurement in 10deg increments of the shell profile - so basically just a shuttered laser measure that sends back to a spreadsheet - only the kit is now old and needs replacing. At the moment they have to wave this thing around on the end of a series of poles (up to 12m!) as it needs to be within 300mm of the walls, and it's all very clumsy and time consuming (as well as not a very good professional image!) and possibly not even safe. The kit they have at present came from the States and very much looks like something knocked up as a custom job in a workshop at the time.
Ideally, what he'd like to find is something like a rotary laser level that will just sit on a tripod, but doing the vert/horiz scanning instead and just feed data back to a spreadsheet. He's searched and can't find anything, wonder if any of you chaps in industry have come across something along these lines??
